The (dry) 2016 Scharzhofberger Riesling opens with seriously concentrated and flinty fruit and crunchy slate aromas. On the palate, this is a lean, straight, elegant but complex and very mineral Scharzhofberger with remarkable purity, length and freshness. There are crunchy slate flavors and very fine tannins in the finish. This 2016 is still tight and discreet (well, it's a Scharzhofberger) but very promising.
With his Scharzhofberger 2015, Roman has hit the Grosse Gewächse jackpot. The rich texture and rocky minerality may resemble those of the Volz, but delightfully refreshing acidity lightens the load. If Egon Müller made a dry Scharzhofberger, it couldn’t be better. This is a monument that runs the whole gamut of minerality from salty to medicinal and from rocky to flinty. With so much grace and elegance I save myself describing the body.
